Obesity surgery

The consequences of obesity

If being overweight is closely linked to the conditions associated with obesity, it is not limited to it: chronic hip, knee, foot and back pain, diabetes (high sugar levels), hypertension (high blood pressure ), heart disease, hyperlipidemia, hormonal imbalances, stones, sleep apnea, infertility, increase in certain cancers are just some of the many conditions that can have a significant impact on the patient’s life.

The social consequences of obesity can be just as embarrassing and difficult to cope with. They can have serious psychological consequences.

However, there is a solution for the affected patients who have already tried to lose weight without surgical treatment (approach). Surgical treatment, combined with behavior modification, is currently the only proven method open to obese people to lose weight in the long term.

Obesity surgery: The Results?

  • On average, patients lose approximately 30% (one third) of their initial weight in the first year (18 months) after the procedure.
  • Scientific studies show that 50% of the overweight lost (the overweight you lose after the operation) is maintained even after 10-15 years. Diets and exercise programs offer, on average, only a weight reduction of 8.
  • In addition, other studies have shown that 96% of certain obesity-related conditions, such as back pain, sleep apnea, hypertension, diabetes and depression, improve or resolve after surgery.

Surgery, when other treatment options have failed, is the only treatment option capable of inducing long-term weight loss. However, the operation is only the first step in your essential process of adapting to a new lifestyle. You should be aware that the weight loss following the operation is not immediate and requires your cooperation and commitment to follow the advice given in the long term.
